We’ve all heard the sighs around the office:
“Why can’t these programs just talk to each other?”
“Ugh, this system is down again.”
“I wish this software could just… do that.”
It’s easy to daydream about the “perfect” solution. But before jumping into custom software, it’s worth asking: is custom really the right answer for your business or is off-the-shelf a better fit?
This is part one of a two-part series, where we’ll explore both sides of the equation. Let’s start with when off-the-shelf software usually makes the most sense.
When is off-the-shelf most likely the best solution for my business?
In order to answer this question, first, can you explain your software needs in a way that will guide and direct a profitable search for a successful solution? You should have a clear picture of what your needs are. Oftentimes, custom software isn’t necessarily the best solution based on your needs and priorities.
That said, if any of these sound like you, buying something ready-made might be your best bet:
- You’re solving a pretty common problem that many companies face (not something unique to your business).
- You need a solution fast, and don’t have time to build from scratch.
- Budget is more important right now than highly tailored functionality.
- You’re fine adjusting your processes to match the software.
- Branding the tool as “yours” isn’t a priority.
- Your integration needs are simple—or you don’t really have any.
- If the vendor disappeared tomorrow, it wouldn’t rock your business.
- Switching between providers wouldn’t cause major headaches.
The Bottom Line
Custom software can be amazing—but it’s not always the right move. Off-the-shelf solutions can be surprisingly effective and save you time, money, and energy when your needs line up with what’s already out there.
And if you try off-the-shelf and discover it just doesn’t cut it, that’s where we come in. At Capsher, we love helping companies figure out whether custom software really is the best path forward.
